School Access

The main door (West Entrance) of the school is open from 9:00 AM to 9:20 AM Monday through Friday. All other doors are locked during the day, allowing us to monitor who enters our building. Anyone visiting the school, including parents, is required to sign in at the main office.

Parents are asked not to access the school building through the rear (East Entrance/Daycare) entry doors at any time except for pick-up for the Before and After School Program.

Early Pick-Up

If you need to take a child from school during class time or lunchtime, it is important that the school office is informed so that we know where your child is.

If your child is a bus user, but will not be taking the bus home, please let our office staff know so that we do not hold up the bus while we account for your child. Parents/Guardians can phone in to the school office, send a note, or let us know of these arrangements.

When you come into the school to get your child, please remain at the top of the stairs in the Main Lobby. Our office staff will be happy to call your child to come and meet you in the Lobby. This will minimize disruptions in the class. It is important to note that children may NOT leave the school during the day without an adult.

Supervision

Supervision is provided on the school grounds between 9:00 and 9:15 AM and at lunch time. Please do not drop off children prior to 9:00 AM as there will be no supervision.

There is no after-school supervision. We ask that morning Kindergarten students dismissed at 12:05 PM not play on the school playground after dismissal, as the school playground and fields are often used for outside physical education activities daily and are accessed by lunchroom students. All students and community children are welcome to access our playground after 3:50 PM.

Visitors & Parent Volunteers

As Dalhousie School is a closed campus, all visitors and volunteers must report directly to the main office and sign in and out using the Volunteer/Visitor Sign-In Binder on the table outside the main office. To ensure school security, all exterior doors will be locked after school commences each day. Anyone who is not a student or school staff member is required to sign in at the Main Office.

Under no circumstances are parents/guardians/etc. to proceed to classrooms, Learning Commons, and Hallways except during Parent-Teacher Conferences. If you have a scheduled meeting, please report to the Main Office upon arrival.

All appointments with teachers outside of Parent-Teacher Conferences must be scheduled before or after school hours.

Volunteers at Dalhousie

We welcome and appreciate parent volunteers for on and off-site activities. Many of our field trips would not be possible without the active participation of our parent volunteers. Contact us about ways you can volunteer with our school. Note that to be able to volunteer, parents must have a valid police clearance to work with students.

Each school year parent volunteers must complete the CBE volunteer registration form. By completing the form, you agree to abide by the conditions that protect the safety, confidentiality, and working environment of our schools.

If you want to volunteer for an off-site activity or at school, remember that:

  • Volunteers are considered representatives of the Calgary Board of Education and are subject to the same expectations as staff;
  • Volunteers are subject to the requirements of CBE Administrative Regulation 5003 – Volunteers, which includes an application and a police security screening check;
  • Volunteers are covered by the CBE’s liability insurance policy while performing their assigned duties;
  • Volunteers are covered by WCB while performing their duties;
  • Volunteers receive direction from and are accountable to the teacher-in-charge.

Upon arrival, the volunteer will receive personalized volunteer name tags prepared for each volunteer who has met police clearance/screening requirements. Name tags are to be returned to the office after each visit.

Lockdowns

All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.

Evacuation Procedures

In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.

Video Surveillance Technology

The Calgary Board of Education may install and use video surveillance technology at select schools to support maintaining a safe and secure environment and to help control vandalism and criminal activity on school property.

Personal information gathered by video surveillance is collected under the authority of the Education Act and the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) section 33(b). The users of this information are the principal or designate and law enforcement personnel in the case of reported incidents that would require an investigation. Only authorized persons will review video surveillance information.

This technology is considered a complement to, and not a replacement for, CBE's strategies in supporting a welcoming, caring, safe, and respectful learning and work environment for students and staff.

Approval, installation and use of video surveillance technology will comply with Administrative Regulation 1066.

For questions or concerns, please contact the school principal.
