Project Overview

Beginning spring 2025, our proposed plan came to life: we xeriscaped current sloped beds to reflect indigenous plants that grow on Treaty 7 Territory, to support a re-naturalization of parkland (as influenced by Nose Hill, the park which once extended throughout the neighbourhood of Dalhousie sloping down to the Bow River). We are cultivating species with curricular connections, to encourage pollination, and that are edible (although the magpies get all of our strawberries).

This project is designed as such that it is ongoing and evolving, reflecting the growth of our students, curriculum, and integration of culture. In later phases of the project, we propose the addition of fruits and vegetables in raised containers.

For a detailed overview, we invite you to view our short presentation, which was shared in our 2024/25 school year. We had an extraordinary summer irrigation setup and watering support from families (and encouraged student involvement and ownership of the project). If this is something that you want to be involved with, please let us know by e-mailing

One of the most important ways parents/guardians and community members can make a meaningful difference for students is by participating on the school council. Under the Education Act, a school council is a collective association designed to advise the principal and the CBE Board of Trustees on matters related to the school. School councils have legislated advisory and decision-making authority defined within the Education Act and the School Councils Regulation. They are different from Parent Societies & Associations, whose main function is to raise funds for the school. You can find more details in the CBE School Council Handbook.

About Our School Council

What is the School Council and what do we do?

School councils are a structured groups of parents, principals, teachers and community representatives who work together to support and enhance student learning. They provide a way for members of the community to consult with and offer advice to principals and school boards.

The School Council:

  • is a bridge between the school and community
  • focus on what is best for all students in the school
  • consider the interests of all school stakeholders
  • develop, maintain and reflect the culture of the school
  • represent the parent voice in the school community
  • represent Dalhousie School at the CBE’s Council of School Councils (CoSC)
  • represent Dalhousie at the Alberta School Councils Association (ASCA)

School councils are legislated under the Education Act and are mandatory for all schools in the public education system, including charter schools. Parents of students enrolled in the school must make up the majority of the school council. School councils may also decide to include one or more parents of children enrolled in an Early Childhood Services (ECS) program at the school or other individuals who have an interest in the school.

School councils have legislated advisory and decision-making authority. They are different from Parent Societies & Associations, whose main function is to raise funds for the school.

You can find more details in the CBE School Council Handbook.
