¡Hola Dalhousie Families!
As we move into September, I just want to say that the energy is very positive around the school, and our students are engaged with their teachers in rich learning activities already. Dalhousie School is definitely an amazing place to learn and to be. Please make sure to check our school calendar on our website for any weekly updates and upcoming events.
Our website is updated regularly for families to stay in the loop with our school activities and for any CBE important communication messages.
End-of-Day Protocol
The safety and security of students is our priority at Dalhousie School. We need the support of parents to ensure that students understand, before coming to school, how they will be going home and with whom. This is helpful for your child so they do not need to wonder/worry about this during their school day. Predictability helps children feel secure. Without this in place, the volume of calls received during the school day about such matters quickly becomes unmanageable and at the end of the day, it is not always possible to locate a child regarding a last-minute change. To that end, please do not use the office to change your end-of-day plans, except in an emergency.
If your child is going home with another parent, for example, for a playdate, it will be your responsibility to send a handwritten note to your child’s teacher. Please do not call the office.
Last Minutes Change of Plans
Teachers are in front of students during school hours and check emails before or after school. Do not leave messages on the office mainline or absence line. If something comes up beyond your control, the office staff will try to reach your child before dismissal, being mindful that classroom schedules are flexible, and we may have difficulty locating your child during the final half hour of the day.
If your child usually takes the bus and you plan to pick them up, please meet them at the bus and sign them out with the bus monitor. Thank you for your co-operation. We all need to work together for the safety of our children and at the same time, minimize office and classroom interruptions.
Communication Protocols – Working Together
We recognize that a student's success relies on a strong partnership between families and our school. We understand that parents and students may have concerns, questions, or sometimes complaints about the school. It is crucial that all parents and guardians are aware of the communication protocols between the community and the school to maintain a positive and respectful environment. We are dedicated to listening and addressing your concerns in a respectful, courteous, and timely manner, with all matters handled confidentially.
Most concerns can be addressed at the classroom level. It's usually helpful to arrange a time with your child’s teacher to speak privately. That is the first step.
After meeting with the teacher, if you feel your issue is still unresolved, arrange a time to meet with your principal or assistant principal. They will work with you and the teacher to address your concerns. For more information on concerns and complaints, please visit the CBE’s Concerns and Complaints webpage.
Playground Rules and School Ground Expectations
Please take a moment to review our Playground Rules & Expectations with your student. These rules have been reviewed by all teachers, and will be applied daily. Supervision begins at 8:50 am in the morning.
Please be aware that no dogs are allowed on school grounds as per City of Calgary Bylaw. This regulation is in place for two reasons. Children play on the property and dogs, through no fault of their own can create unsanitary conditions. Perhaps most importantly, some children are fearful of dogs and should not have to face that fear every day.
Parking at Dalhousie
Calgary Parking Authority and Calgary Police Services have been collaborating with the school administration to address multiple complaints and concerns with vehicles parked in the No Parking Zones, Bus Zone, the Hug-and-Go, city Crosswalks, private driveways and also staff parking lot. Do not leave your vehicle unattended in the Drop-Off Hug-and-Go zone. The Hug-and-Go is intended for a quick stop to drop-off students, and help with the traffic flow.
If you are parked in the no parking zones during school hours, the Calgary Parking Authority will be driving by regularly, and you will be ticketed for parking infractions.
Terry Fox Campaign
Our annual Terry Fox campaign will kick off Monday September 16. Last year Dalhousie school was recognized for coming in at #12 in the Top 50 Fundraisers of Alberta, raising an incredible $7,493.95. This year we are hoping to match or exceed last year’s efforts.
As a school community, we will be taking on the challenge of running the 5373 kilometres that Terry ran during his Marathon of Hope. The week on September 23-26, all students will be contributing to our efforts by running/walking and counting their laps during gym time. We hope to complete out feat during our school wide “No Matter What” run on October 1 that celebrates Terry’s determination and persistence.
Pledge forms will be sent home on Monday September 16 with students and they can be returned to school by September 26th. Online donations can also be made to the Terry Fox foundation using our school’s page https://schools.terryfox.ca/DalhousieSchoolCalgary
Toonies for Terry will also be collected starting Monday September 16.
